We are just starting our own herd of Heritage Dexter Cattle. I have been doing my homework regarding the lines for solid confirmation and good milking traits. We will focus on producing cows with all around good conformation temperaments and nice udders. We plan to produce raw milk for home use and cheese making, and are working with our local agricultural extension office on this venture.
Dexter cows are probably best known for their ability to easily convert feed to body mass. Their moderate size is a real benefit for a small farm. I have heard it said that 2 Dexters can occupy the same amount of land normally needed for 1 full sized cow. Dexters are very friendly with caregivers that have earned their trust and display affection to their human herd members. Mine follow me around the pasture like puppies, I might have a treat in my pocket and they don't want to miss out...
.You know your accepted when they begin grooming you, and licking your hands and arms.
They are long lived cows and some have been reported to live as long as 17-18 years. Also notable in this breed is their ease of calving, and outstanding mothering abilities.
A special note on breeding these animals:
If you would like to breed Dexters: locate the best possible foundation stock, do not pair animals which are lacking just to get a cow, you are doing a great disservice to the breed and yourself. .
You can also find information at local livestock shows; be sure to attend with notebook in hand. That way you can see the best of each herd, and meet some really great folks along the way.
WARNING: Over the last few decades it has become tendy to have say, a Mini Jersey some of these cows (downsizing to mini) have been crossed with Dexters matings were not researched and records poorly managed. The simple goal was to produce a designer mini cow that they would sell on the "Rare" and "Cuteness" factor and then charge buyers thousands of dollars! Some of these mini cows have the dwarf gene and will cause " bulldog calves" dead at birth. Again, working with folks dedicated to producing healthy cows is the way to go!!! If you would like more info email me.
on 1-23-09 Monnie gave us our first calf. He is built very well, and is going to be a nice bull when he matures.
This robust little guy is for sale, contact us for more info on his pedigree and price, we may be interested in swaping him out for a hiefer or cow. He has strong milky cows behind him and would bring that to your herd.
NOTE:
The red brindle bull shown is his full brother, that photo was taken when he was only 6 months old! Can you imagine how nice he will be when all grown up!
